Home Sweet City

Home Sweet City

The last few days on our city’s unofficial forum have been really crazy. At the last council meeting one of our Councilmen was trying to argue a very important point on behalf of the citizens of our city and since the meeting date fell on July 3rd, the day before the 4th of July, three out of our eight Councilmen were absent which left us with a quorum of five plus the Mayor, City Attorney and the City Administrator.

The point being argued was on the new budget and how they arrived at the amount they did. My favorite Councilmen was arguing on behalf of we the citizens and the others, including the Mayor, were trying to get him to vote on raising our utility rates by 10%. Now I’m not going to go into the nuts and bolts of the argument b/c to be frank a lot of it went over my head but what happened was very shocking.

When my favorite Councilmen saw that the others were not going to budge he, as he put it, “fell on his sward” and promptly got out of his seat and walked out of the meeting! BRAVO COUNCILMAN!!!

A lot of people have been calling him out for it on the forum but the people who are trying to put him down for it were NOT at the meeting so they did not see what happened! The other councilmen were, in a sense, ganging up on him so he did the only thing he could do. He has told us that a decision like that was too important to vote on with only five Councilmen present so he left plain and simple. Personally I’m very proud of him and I’m so very proud to have such an intelligent and passionate gentlemen representing our city.

My prayer for him is that he keeps the faith and stays with it, we need him on that council but more importantly I think he needs to run for mayor! I know that’s a lot for him to take on but I think as mayor he would be very fair and he would do what is best for this city and not try to carry out his own agenda! And while I can’t get into it here I can tell you that the more I find out about our current mayor the more it turns my stomach!

It’s times like this when I miss my old friend Ronnie from Arizona. He was one of my best friends and he knows politics inside and out! When I first arrived in Bisbee they had just had their elections and he had run for Mayor but at the very last minute his opponent hit him with a smear campaign and he didn’t have a chance to recover from it before the elections and he ended up loosing but only by a small margin.

Ronnie and I would talk for hours and hours about the city and what was going on and he taught me all about city politics. I didn’t know it was so fascinating until he explained it to me and he even told me that when I came back home I should run for office myself. I never did and never will but all these years later I’m starting to understand our city government and the more I find out the more disgusted I’ve become and it’s never been more clear to me than it is now how important it is that we pray for our city and our elected officials and I wish that Ronnie were here so that I could talk to him about all off this.
