Fear Can Be Good

This evening on my way home from prayer I realized something. I realized that it’s okay to be scared, or nervous, to do something. Now most Christians will tell you that fear is wrong and that’s it’s of the devil and to rebuke it, but hold on hear me out.

When you’re scared, or nervous, about something it means that you’re not going into something half hazard. It means that you’re putting some thought into your decision because you don’t want to step out and be wrong. In that sense then fear can be a good thing.

So, my advice would be to take one step and stop. And if the ground doesn’t crumble underneath you then take one more step, stop, and wait. And you keep doing this until you know that the ground under you is solid; and then you run towards what you want!

Don’t be afraid to run towards what you want because you might just find out that it’s running towards you too.

Saturday Meeting

Our meeting is this Saturday the 17th at 5:30 at the café (1117 N. Jackson).

Last time only one person showed up and this time that person isn’t able to make it. So if no one shows up I don’t know that I’ll keep this group open. I’ll just have to think about it b/c I’m not going to kill myself if no one’s going to show up for the meetings.

Sorry for being harsh but I don’t know what else to do. My dream is to write and make films and it’s hard to sit back and watch that dream die b/c everyone just looses interest.

I don’t know. Perhaps we should put the Doctor Who / Tomorrow People film on hold for now and work on something else? Something smaller and more suited for our small group but still keep working on B/O behind the scenes? You know, set and costume ideas and so forth?

The café is thinking about hosting a WhoviCon, not specifically for us just b/c the owners are huge Who fans. What do you guys think, is that something we would like to get involved in? Personally I think it will be good for us but we, as a group, would need to help the owners think of activities and so for to do at the Con. I thought of a costume contest and Tiffany, one of the owners, thought of a TARDIS building contest – which I love the idea of but we’d have to have more than just those two things to do. They can’t show episodes there b/c they don’t have a commercial license so we’d need to have other things to do.

The Parents Television Council has issued an urgent warning to parents and advertisers concerning the explicit content of an animated programming block that just launched.

“Just when you think network standards couldn’t get any lower, they do,” begins PTC’s online alert about a new animated programming block on the FOX television network that debuted last Saturday. It is the latest attempt by FOX to enter the late night fray similar to the Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" programming block.

While the shows may appear innocent, Dan Isett, director of public policy for the Parents Television Council (PTC), warns they are ultra-violent, sexually explicit, and profanity-laden cartoons.

“There’s an entire section of this thing that’s all about ‘sexting’ – the taking of [explicit] photographic images of young men and distributing them through the whole school,” he tells OneNewsNow. “There’s references to group sex and all sorts of things that I frankly can’t describe very well.”

According to Isett, FOX has quietly built an audience for the programming via the Internet by showing explicit animations on the program's website – which has no parental controls. “Any eight-year-old could simply click and watch selections from a collection of three-minute cartoons that are more explicit than anything we’ve seen on broadcast television to-date,” says PTC.

Examples of X-rated animations that FOX has already made available online – and eventually may air on broadcast television – include nude, anatomically correct characters; dead, decomposing corpses that are disrobed; lesbianism; and fondling of women.

“The really key thing for parents to understand is that this is not the cartoons that you grew up with,” Isett urges. “[And] to not trust FOX in this instance, because they’ve taken things that sort of look like classic cartoon fare and turned it into something really raunchy and offensive and damaging to your children.”

PTC urges parents and grandparents to call their local Fox affiliates and ask that this programming block be preempted in their community.

Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular Returning In 2014

BBC Worldwide have announced the return of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular to venues in Australia. Three concerts will take place during January and February of 2014 in Melbourne and Queensland, also with the possibility of future performances in New Zealand, though these have not yet been confirmed.

The Scottish-born actor becomes the 12th actor to play the British sci-fi icon.

And the sonic screwdriver goes to Peter Capaldi.

The Scottish actor was named the new star of the British sci-fi franchise Doctor Who on Sunday during a live broadcast on BBC America. He will replace the departing Matt Smith, whose time in the time-traveling police box the TARDIS ends later this year.

"It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer," said Capaldi, a lifelong fan of the show. "I haven't played Doctor Who since I was 9 on the playground."

Capaldi, 55, becomes the 12th man to play the Doctor since the cult show debuted in 1963 with star William Hartnell and the fourth Time Lord since executive producer Russell T Davies rebooted Doctor Who in 2005, following Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Smith.

Executive producer Steven Moffat had considered Capaldi when they were casting the 11th Doctor. "There comes a right time for the right person to play it," he said.

"We all had the same idea and it was a quite different idea," Moffat added. When he and his team made a video with Capaldi, "everybody saw it and was like, 'That's the Doctor.' "

American audiences most recently saw Capaldi as a World Health Organization doctor in the movie World War Z, and he also has big-screen roles in the upcoming The Fifth Estate this fall and next year's Maleficent.

The half-hour live special on BBC America, hosted by British TV personality Zoe Ball, also featured past Who stars, including Peter Davison, the fifth Doctor (1981-84).

"In a way it's the longest job in television. It's a whirlwind time when you do it, and it keeps on going after," said Davison, whose daughter is married to the 10th Doctor, Tennant.

Smith recalled that people initially met his casting with backlash, but fans ultimately came around for him as the Doctor.

"There are no parts like this," he said. "I loved it, I'll miss it, but when you gotta go, you gotta go."

Doctor Who has long been a hit in the U.K., but more recently the Doctor has gained a huge following in the USA, with the show becoming the highest-rated series on BBC America.

Capaldi will make his first appearance in the Doctor Who Christmas Special at the end of 2013, and it marks Smith's final jaunt as the Doctor. Fans get to see him one more time, though, when Smith stars with Jenna Coleman, John Hurt and Tennant in the 50th anniversary special airing on Nov. 23.

The main reason the series is still a fixture in global pop culture is because of anybody who's ever watched it, Capaldi said. "Doctor Who belongs to all of us. Everybody makes Doctor Who."

Silence!

Silence! – April 18, 2013

This morning I woke up at 8:50AM in almost a panic. My breathing was heavy and all I could think in my mind was, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus! What was that?”

I had been having a very strange dream; not a “nightmare” per-say but just a very strange dream but it felt like it had a meaning to it. Now please DO NOT misconstrue what I’m trying to say here. I AM NOT saying that this dream was from the Lord. What I’m saying is that out of my strange dream I feel that the Lord may have given it a meaning. The two are very different.

Okay so here it is.

It was daytime and I was in, what felt like a coffee shop. I was sitting at the counter or table drinking my coffee and looking out the large windows when I saw a flying saucer. Okay yes I know that I love those silly old “B” science fiction films and I love Doctor Who so this might sound normal for me but wait.

It flew into sight and I watched it fly over running to the back window to watch it. Beside it came, what looked like, two flying busses. The saucer went invisible and one of the busses flew into it while the other landed, kinda like they were coming and going.

The one landed and people started to spill out of the bus but from the driver’s side. They didn’t look normal, they had a very strange look in their eyes and walked weird. I would equate it to somewhat of a “zombie” look and feel. They still looked like normal human beings but you could tell that something was “off” and they had a strange zoned out look in their eyes.

I ran to the counter and grabbed my things and all of the sudden this little boy kind of appeared. Not out of thin air but he was sitting there beside my books and purse. He looked “off” as well with a sinister or dark look about him; kind of haunting.. He was around five or six, possibly seven, with blond hair and blue eyes. There was also an old lady with him but on the other side of me; kind of like his grandmother.

I quickly grabbed my stuff and ran out to my car. There was panic everywhere and as I drove down the street I called my friend Tammy. I told her that I was coming over and that I needed her to start praying over her house and pleading the blood of Jesus over it and sealing it because of that I had to tell her. She kept asking questions, none of which I remember, but I kept saying, “Please Tammy, if you ever loved me as your best friend PLEASE pray over your house and pray that I can get there! PLEASE!!!” I was terrified. When I got off the phone with her that little boy was sitting beside me on the middle console of my car! There was an old lady right behind me. How did they get in my car?!

I shoved them out of the passenger’s side and tried to keep driving but I got caught up in traffic and then I was in a crowd. They kept mocking me. The boy and the old lady were there but then a younger woman, perhaps in her late teens or very early 20’s, came towards me. She was wearing what looked like a blue hospital gown. She had redish-brown hair cut just above her shoulders that was wild and unkept and she staggered a bit asking me if I had a tissue. She had the same sinister zombie look to her, they all did.

I shoved her away telling her that I didn’t have a tissue and to leave me along but she kept bothering me. Then two surly looking men approached me one black and one white. The white guy sat in the seat behind me and black man in front of me. They were mocking me and teasing me and I kept trying to get away from there but it felt like I was on a bus and couldn’t get away.

The next thing I knew they grabbed me and drug me away and threw me in a room. I kept trying to scream, “JESUS!” over and over again but when I opened my mouth little to nothing came out. I kept trying to quote, “Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” But the word “Jesus” barely came out of my mouth. I was pointing at them and trying to speak and nothing.

Finally I woke up saying, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!” And asking the Lord what that was about. As I said I DO NOT feel that the Lord gave me this dream but if He can use a donkey to speak He can certainly use this frightening dream to do the same.

What I felt was this. Satan is trying to silence what small voice I have. Now I know that I’m really nothing in the church. I take care of the babies once every three months or so but I don’t do anything else. I’m not connected to the “right” people so therefore I don’t feel like I can fulfill my hearts desire in that church. And I’m SOOO different that any of the people I know; never mind women, that I don’t make friends very easily. And the friends I have made have dropped me like a shoe as soon as they get to know the “real” me so I keep to myself.

So my question is this: what exactly is Satan trying to silence? I don’t really have any friends and it’s not like people actually listen to me so I don’t get it. Is he trying to kill (silence) my dreams? Why they’re not really “Christian” just family oriented. I just don’t get it.

Okay so there it is. Maybe I got it wrong and maybe I’m just making this all up but I can’t shake what I felt that dream ment.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently proposed changing the rules governing their enforcement of broadcast decency laws. Under the new rules, the FCC would only investigate and issue fines against the most “egregious” broadcast content. Harsh profanity and “non-sexual” nudity might not be punished under the new rules — IF we allow those new rules to be implemented.

That’s right. The FCC is giving the broadcast networks license to air as much explicit profanity and nudity at any time of the day, regardless of how many children might be in the viewing audience.

And as we all know, if you give the networks an inch, they’ll take a mile… so if this rules change goes into effect, we can expect to see an explosion of sex, profanity and graphic nudity pouring into our homes over the airwaves WE OWN.

It’s an outrage! The FCC was created to protect consumers, not as a lobbying arm of the entertainment industry! And yet once again, families lose out and Hollywood gets to push its anything goes agenda on the rest of us.

People today talk about shows being canceled too soon as if it was a current phenomenon. But the history of television is scattered with iconic shows that didn’t last that long on the air, but seemed like they must have rivaled Gunsmoke. The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams falls into that category. Dan Haggerty’s portrayal of the wrongly accused mountain man hiding out in the wilderness began with the massively popular The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams movie in 1974. The movie was adapted into TV series that joined the NBC schedule as a winter replacement in 1977. Haggerty immediately became a hit with his warm smile, bushy beard and magic touch with animals. Yet even with everything going right for the show, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams: Season Two is the only full season it aired.

“Hot Air Hero” brings another guest to Grizzly’s remote cabin by an unusual mode of transportation. A hot air balloon piloted by Gino Conforti (Here’s Lucy) crashes. The man dreams of setting up the air mail version of the Pony Express. “A Bear’s Life” has Mad Jack (Dukes of Hazzard‘s Denver Pyle) and Grizzly working around the cabin. Ben the bear decides to goof of and be a bear for the day. A young Indian is up for his manhood ritual in “The Trial.” He must prove his manhood by catching fish except an otter ruins his day. He cheats in a last ditch move. “Gold Is Where You Find It” brings Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker back to the wilderness. The F Troop stars are suckered into buying a worthless gold map. Can they find an honest living off the land?

“Track of the Cougar” puts Grizzly against his Indian pal Nokoma (Don Shanks). A village has been attacked by a cougar that might have been raised by Grizzly. Can he let his pal snuff his former pet? “The Spoilers” has settlers near Hoot Owl Creek fear their water source is being poisoned. Not to spoil the episode, but Ken Lynch (Mr. Haney on Green Acres) is the guest star. “Marvin the Magnificent” brings a guest bear to the cabin. Can two men with two bears get along without killing each other? “The Seekers” find the great Keenan Wynn (Dr. Strangelove) arrive before a storm.

Roger E. Mosley” (Magnum P.I.) arrives in chains for “The Runaway.” Where is he coming from? Mad Jack doesn’t think it’s smart for Grizzly to be near the guy mainly cause he might attract people who would be delight to grab Roger and Grizzly for their bounties. “The Renewal” is an Easter special featuring Patrick Wayne (Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger). “The Skyrider” brings the ’70s fad of hang gliding to Grizzly’s mountain. Russ Tamblyn (Twin Peaks) takes flight. “The World’s Greatest Bounty Hunter” turns Mad Jack mad enough to think he needs to snag Grizzly for the reward.

“Once Upon a Starry Night” is a Christmas special that aired the season after the show was canceled. This 70 minute movie of the week features wolves and an avalanche. Ken Curtis (Festus on Gunsmoke) and Don Galloway (Ironside) are part of the holiday celebration in the mountains. So maybe this is part of why it felt like Grizzly Adams was on the TV longer than less than two seasons. What ended Grizzly Adams run? NBC hired Burt Silverman. The executive was eager to air more adult oriented sitcoms than family oriented dramas which was his key to running CBS and ABC. It didn’t work that well at NBC. Luckily Grizzly Adams remained in the heart of America. Fans still request Dan Haggerty marry them at Dennis Hof’s Bunny Ranch.

“The Trial,” “Survival,” “A Bear’s Life,” “The Choice,” “Hot Air Hero,” “Track of the Cougar,” “The Search,” “Marvin the Magnificent,” “Woman in the Wilderness,” “The Orphans,” “Gold Is Where You Find It,” “A Time of Thirsting,” “The Seekers,” “The Spoilers,” “The Stranger,” “The Runaway,” “A Gentleman Tinker,” “The World’s Greatest Bounty Hunter,” “The Littlest Greenhorn,” “The Great Burro Race,” “The Quest,” “The Skyrider,” “The Renewal” and “Once Upon a Starry Night.”

The video is 1.33:1 full frame. The transfer quality isn’t so great for some of the episodes. But I’d heard the show was shot on 16mm which is why the resolution isn’t quite up to snuff. The audio is mono. The mix varies on the episodes.

A Conversation with Dan Haggerty (13:15) lets Grizzly Adams tell how he was discovered for the role. He gives Denver Pyle’s tips for not squinting on camera. Turns out they shot in three locations depending on the snow. This is an unexpected bonus feature since he didn’t seem eager to record anything when I met Haggerty last October.

The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams: Season Two brings back a time when a network nature program didn’t involve people being voted off the island. Grizzly was a calming influence in the wilderness with his pet bear. The show still maintains the charms of when it ran in the ’70s.
